Our Story

I started this business because I learned first-hand that people living with chronic illness that you can’t see are often neglected and fail to get the care and compassion they deserve.

It was Thursday, January 25, 2018 when I was at my job as a certified medical coder. We just finished up another stressful staff meeting and as I sat at my desk, I experienced a sudden, sharp pain on my left side. Right away, I had to be transported to the emergency room. It was there that I discovered that not only was I bleeding internally, but I had an extremely large benign, vascular mass called an angiomyolipoma coming from my kidney and it was also invading my inferior vena cava (largest vein the body that carries blood to the heart).

Overnight my life changed.

From that point, I battled with managing frequent medical appointments with four different urologists, visits to oncologists in two states, and experienced a host of debilitating side effects from medication that was prescribed to shrink the mass. I recall there were times when would sit in the waiting room before my oncology appointments and would observe that I was the youngest person there. There were times, I would go to the grocery store after having a procedure where I would be tired, and winded, so I opted to do my shopping in a motorized cart. I would get looks of disdain, eye rolls, the unspoken reaction of ‘you don’t need that scooter’. That’s the struggle that many Americans face who live with a chronic disease.  Here are the facts.

My story has a light in that I was able to get the mass successfully removed with surgery. As a result, I now live with one kidney. However, the ordeal opened my eyes to see and understand that those who live with chronic illness want to be seen and heard. They want to feel relevant and whole without judgment.
